How to Use Your QLM On-Premises Floating License

An On-Premises Floating License operates by pulling a license seat from the host server when opening Simio and returns the license seat by closing Simio. This type of license is activated on a server hosted by your organization. The number of concurrent users is limited to the number of license seats purchased. If there are no available license seats, Simio will open in Unlicensed Edition.

Activating your QLM On-Premises Floating License on the Host Server

Important: Before you start, please note that whatever device first activates your license becomes the “owner” and is the only device that will be able to apply changes to the license (e.g., update maintenance, transfer license to a new server, refresh license to pull down latest license properties, etc.).
    1. Download and run SimioFloatingLicenseUtilitiesInstall.msi on the server you wish to host the license.
    2. Open the now downloaded Simio Floating License Wizard on the host server.
    3. Select “Activate Your License”.
    4. Choose “Floating License Database Type”, this is where and how you want to store your license:
      1. XML – Recommended for small installations of less than 30 concurrent users.
      2. MS Access - Recommended for medium installations of 30-100 concurrent users.
        1. Copy the folder “If Using MS-Access, Copy This File To Your Shared Folder” located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Simio LLC\Simio Floating License Utilities to the location you wish to have the file share.
      3. MS SQL – Recommended for large installations of 100+ concurrent users.
        1. Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
        2. Right-click on the server and select “Properties”.
        3. Go to Security and ensure Server authentication is set to “SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode”.
        4. Run the “sql.floatingdb.createdb.sql” script located in C:\Program Files (x86)\Simio LLC\Simio Floating License Utilities in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
Note: The XML and MS Access options require a shared folder on the host machine. Before activating a license, double check that the shared folder has been set up by right-clicking on the folder, selecting “Properties”, and clicking on the “Sharing” tab. You should see “Shared” under the folder name, if not, select “Share…” and set up the shared folder.
    1. Select a “Floating License Location” by setting a filepath to a fileshare on the server in which all users can reach the license.
Note: The filepath on the host should be specified in the exact same way the clients will specify the filepath (i.e., \\ServerName\ShareName and not C:\Local\Path\To\FileShare). This is the network path to the shared location.
    1. Click “Register”. You will then see “You Have Successfully Registered The Floating License”.
    2. Click “Next”.
    3. Select Online/Offline activation method:
      1. Online – If you have internet access and are not on a secure network, we recommend selecting “Activate Online”.
        1. Enter “Activation Key” with the key provided by Simio Licensing.
        2. Click “Activate License Key”.
      2. Offline – If you do not have internet access or are on a secure network, we recommend selecting “Activate Offline”.
        1. Enter “Activation Key” with the key provided by Simio Licensing as well as your “Computer Key” which can be found by:
          1. Clicking Scan QR Code (recommended if you have a subscription license).
          2. Going to https://qlm1.net/simio/qlmcustomersite (required if you have a perpetual license).
            1.  Note: If your organization has purchased a perpetual license and you are operating in a dark site, you must:
              1. Visit https://qlm1.net/simio/qlmcustomersite.
              2. Select “Activate a license”.
              3. Fill out the:
                1. “Activation Key”.
                2. “Simio1.0”.
                3. “Computer ID” of the server.
                4. Check the “Generate a license file” box.
              4. Click “Activate”.
              5. This will download LicenseFile.xml which must be saved on client computers in the C:\Program Data\SimioLLC.
        2. Click “Activate”.
    4. You should see “Your License is Activated”, then click “Finish”. The license file is now stored in the filepath you specified in Step 5. Clients should be able to pull a license seat down from the server to use.

Connecting the Client (End User) to the License Host Server

    1. Open Simio.
    2. Click “File” and then “Licensing”.
    3. Select correct licensing type in Simio:
      1. If this is your first-time licensing Simio, choose “Server-Based Floating License”.
      2. If this is not your first-time licensing Simio, choose “Change License Type” and then “Server-Based Floating License”.
    4. Click “Configure”.
    5. Click “Activate your license”.
    6. Choose “Floating License Database Type” – this has already been selected by the person who activated the licenses. If you are unsure which, ask the Simio license administrator at your organization.
    7. Click the ellipsis (…) next to the “Floating License Location” textbox.
    8. Select the filepath of the fileshare where the license is hosted.
Note: The filepath on the host should be specified in the exact same way the clients will specify the filepath (i.e., \\ServerName\ShareName and not C:\Local\Path\To\FileShare). This is the network path to the shared location.
    1. Click “Register”, you should see “You Have Successfully Registered The Floating License”.
    2. Click “Finish”. You should see the edition of the software purchased by your organization in the title bar.

Connecting the Client (End User) to the License Host Server via Command Prompt

    1. Open Command Prompt.
    2. Enter in the line something like the following: “FilePathOfSimio.exe” -authenticate:\\ServerName\ShareName\FileName.FileExtension
    Example: C:\Program Files\Simio\Simio.exe -authenticate:\\ServerName\ShareName\SimioFloating.xml
    1. Open Simio and you should see the edition of the software purchased by your organization in the title bar.

    Deactivating / Transferring a License

To transfer the server license to a different server, the license must first be deactivated before it can be reactivated on a different server. Please ensure that all license seats are returned to the server before deactivating the license.

Important: A license is limited to two deactivations per year.
    1. Log on to the server where the license is hosted.
    2. Open Simio Floating License Wizard.
    3. Click “Deactivate Your License”.
    4. Ensure the correct license key is in the “Activation Key” textbox.
    5. Click “Deactivate”.
    6. The message “Your License Was Successfully Deactivated” should appear.
    7. Click “Finish”.

The license should now be deactivated, to check this, open Simio on a client machine and it should open in Unlicensed Edition. Now that the license has been successfully deactivated, it can be reactivated on a different server.

    Simio Floating License View

You can view your license information from the Simio Floating License Viewer on the server hosting the license. To set up the Viewer, follow these steps:

    1. Ensure you have downloaded and ran SimioFloatingLicenseUtilitiesInstall.msi on the server hosting the license.
    2. Open the now downloaded Simio Floating License Viewer on the server.
    3. Upon opening, you will receive an error message. This can be ignored; the Simio Floating License Viewer does not yet know the current location of your license files until it is configured with the following steps.
    4. Click “Options” and change the Database Type and Path to the location of your floating license files:
      1. Change the Database Type to match your storage location (i.e., XML, MS Access, MS SQL).
      2. Click the ellipsis (…) to open a File Explorer which can input your filepath for the Database Path.
      3. In this case, the path will follow the format: C:\Local\Path\To\FileShare\LicenseFile.
    5. Click “OK” to exit the Options window.
Don't Forget: You may need to click “Refresh” for the license to appear.
Note: If a license has not been checked out by a client, it will not appear in the Simio Floating License Viewer.

    Roaming a License

By default, Simio will return a license seat to the host whenever Simio is closed. However, if you are planning to go offline (i.e., travelling, working from home, etc.) and need a license seat to work on Simio, you can roam a license seat.

Roaming a license pulls down a license seat for a specific number of days and stores it on a client machine. Once those specified number of days are up or a user decides to return the license seat, the license seat will return to the host.

It is not possible to roam more license seats than you have purchased. License seats are often thought of as a library book, while the book (or license seat) is in use by one client, another client cannot use that seat until it is returned. For example, if my organization has purchased four license seats, only four people will be able to use a licensed edition of Simio at a time.

Note: Carefully consider the number of days to roam: the license seat will stay roamed the entirety of the days selected if the user does not return the license seat manually by clicking “Return”. This could cause a shortage of licenses if users are not actively returning their licenses. Simio LLC cannot assist in the returning of licenses.

    Expected License Behavior

Once you have successfully registered the floating license to your client, it will automatically pull down a license seat from the host if there is an available license seat to use. If there is not an available license seat, Simio will open in Unlicensed Edition.
